Besides writing and publishing my own essays and short stories in national magazines, newspapers, and literary reviews, I have mentored numerous writers who have sold their fiction, essays, and book manuscripts to major, traditional publishers. I wrote my own proposal, with which I subsequently sold "The Story Within," to Penguin Random House without an agent, securing a contract that placed the book in 20 countries around the world and in every Barnes and Noble in the US for the last six years.

"Laura Oliver is an immensely talented writer, teacher and storyteller. Her book is fun to read and she will make you a better writer." - Jon Franklin, Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism and the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing.

"Oliver's book manages to be simultaneously eloquent, no-nonsense, inspirational, funny, and loaded with truly practical ideas. I envy Oliver's students, who must thrive under her understanding and enthusiasm." - Cynthia Gorney, Graduate School of Journalism, U.C Berkley Contributing Writer, The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic Magazine.

"When I was writing my memoir, I was still suffering the stigma of my son's addiction and fearful of the story's impact on our family, let alone my son. Laura Oliver was not only the best advisor to be a first reader, but she was someone I instinctively trusted with all these fears. It was her sensitive, intuitive and highly instructive guidance that helped shape the book, and, ultimately, led to its publication by Apprentice House Press. - Lisa Hillman, author.

"Laura Oliver is an extraordinary gifted teacher and writer. One of her most captivating qualities is a wry sense of humor that makes every class a joyful experience." - Mary Lou Baker, workshop participant Annapolis, Maryland.

"I took a workshop last semester with Laura Oliver. She is such a talented and insightful teacher of writing. I learned so much! I feel fortunate to have had her as an instructor." - Elizabeth Knuton, Professor Emerita of French, Dept. of Languages and Cultures, U.S Naval Academy.
